"Electricity in here," he said, sensing a change in the character of the very space he occupied. Something was happening. And ahead in the road was a flock of white sheep. What the fuck. He managed to stop the car just in front of them. They didn't move. Angie was smiling. "They've gotten free." "Sheep," he said, dumbly. "This is too weird." Horror undulates. It doesn't always arrive in a tsunami rush but, as in nature, it waxes and wanes. They're not here but -- They're coming. |
This is the tale of a cross-country road trip gone haywire. It's August, 2019, and Billy Buck is ferrying his two teenage kids, Ashley and Bryan, from New Hampshire to Southern California, in an aging van they call the Green Latrine - his wife Diane has won sole custody and wants them with her before school starts.
Dutifully, Billy obliges. But what happens along the way several times - far beyond flat tires and fender-benders - upends their notion of what's possible in the "real" world. They discover that the impossible can also be true. Over the years I've met with several people who've had extraordinary experiences and heard their accounts of what they believe happened. I don't apply any labels to these events because we really don't know what they are. Excerpts"Dad." "Yes, Bry." "This trip. Will we go near Devils Tower?" "I don't know, son." "Part of me wants to go, part of me doesn't." "Same here," and he turned to look at his boy. His eyes were narrow slits. "Something happened out there," Bry said. "Something happened, yes." "Real." "Whatever that means, yes." "Why we slowing?" Bryan asked. "So your sister doesn't puke." "I'm trying," said Ash. "Look out the window. Grab a piece of horizon and get a fix on it - it helps." "This car sucks." "Yes it does." Billy had long since lost count of the number of times he'd cleaned up her vomit, since Diane absolutely refused to do so... |
